#1 Dive Into Wyoming History & Culture
There are so many ways to experience the old west culture and history of Wyoming while you’re in Cheyenne. These are a few of the best museums to visit while in the capital city.
1. Cheyenne Depot Museum
This museum is in a cool historic train depot that was built in the 1800s. Wyoming is full of cowboy history and archeological finds, so this museum educated you in some other areas of Wyoming’s history. This is a good museum for family travelers because kids under 12 are free! This museum is one of the most fun things to do in Cheyenne!
2. Wyoming State Museum
This museum is one of the best things to do in Cheyenne! It’s a free museum that features a lot of artifacts and information on Native Americans and the wild buffalo & dinosaurs of Wyoming. It’s a huge museum and I love that it has interactive activities that keep young kids engaged.
3. The Nelson Museum of The West
Dedicated to western culture and the “cowboy code” that people use to live by in Wyoming, this museum gives you an idea of what life was like on the American Frontier. They also have artifacts and artwork from Native Americans and Mexicans that called the old west home. The Nelson Museum of The West is one of the very best Cheyenne tourist attractions.
#2 See a Wyoming Rodeo
Cheyenne is home to Cheyenne Frontier Days, the world’s largest outdoor rodeo and western celebration. If you’re visiting Wyoming in July, August, or September, you’re in luck!
There are events, food festivals, concerts, art shows, tons of delicious carnival and chuckwagon food, as well as rodeos and other events during these months. A trip to Cheyenne really isn’t complete without seeing a rodeo. They have barrel racing, steer wrestling, wild horse racing, and a lot more!
There are a few ways to save money as well. First is military Monday where people with a military ID will get a free C stand rodeo ticket and free gate admission. There are also some days where you can get a free c stand rodeo youth ticket with the purchase of a full-price adult ticket.

#3 Taste Your Way Through The City
Since Wyoming is in the northwestern part of the country, you get a unique fusion of foods in Cheyenne that are to die for. You can find Canadian dishes like poutine, then you also have some typical western dishes like chicken fried steak and bison burgers.
Sanford’s Grub and Pub is one of the best restaurants in Cheyenne! They not only have you covered when it comes to western and northern cuisine, but their menu was also full of southern dishes as well. As southerners, we were thrilled to see things like the “Kentucky Blue Grass Bourbon Steak” and the “Smoky Mountain Blues Steak”. If you are a cajun fan, you can find plenty of deep south cuisine as well.
Sanford’s was one of the first places we went in Cheyenne and we can’t recommend it enough. The inside is decorated with old license plates, neon signs, unique statues, and Americana. Super great vibes and the best service!
We had the potato skins appetizer (9/10, would get again). Kids can get the grilled cheese kids meals which came with fries and applesauce (9/10, would get again- they put little sour patch kids in the applesauce). Lastly, we got the Liar Liar spicy chicken sandwich and cajun fries (10/10 the best chicken sandwich ever).
Something else we loved about Sanford’s was that kids get free ice cream with a kid’s meal. When you’re leaving the restaurant, head up front to the ice cream counter for their free ice cream! You can top it with sprinkles and take it to go.
With the unique dishes and the eclectic interior design at Sanford’s Grub & Pub, this restaurant makes its way onto the list of weird things to do in Cheyenne!
Now that we’ve shared my favorite place to eat in Cheyenne, let’s talk about a few other amazing restaurants in Cheyenne.
Do you like bubble tea? Espressos? Cheese & nut boards? Paramount Cafe has all of that and more. The cafe is built into a historic old building near Capital Avenue. They’re one of those little cafes that keep a blackboard sign out front adorned with a cute drawing a funny joke about coffee. A must-visit in Cheyenne!
Wyoming Rib & Chop House
Meat lover? This chophouse was awarded the Best Steak House In Montana and Wyoming, the only steak house in the nation to be awarded the best in two states. They also have award-winning ribs as well as their specialty 16 oz. buffalo ribeye. If you’ve never been to the American west before and want to try buffalo, this chophouse is the place to be.
Mary’s Mountain Cookies
Ready for dessert? You can get huge cookies and brownies at Mary’s! Get flavors like Oreo Crunch Avalanche, S’more’s, Snickers, and Orange Doodle. You can also get ice cream at Mary’s. If you’ve really got a sweet tooth try an ice cream stuffed cookie sandwich!
